Phantom Farms

Phantom Farms

Phantom Farm is a community garden operated in collaboration with the Phoenixville Area School District and Trellis for Tomorrow. The garden is a partnership that will provide education and leadership opportunities for students while also producing nutrient-dense produce for the surrounding community.

The Phantom Farms project supports growing garden clubs at the middle and high school levels, fostering hands-on experiential learning, project management skills, and a deeper connection to the natural world. By building robust systems to ensure long-term sustainability, this project will deliver meaningful experiences for youth while also bringing nutrient-dense produce into the community. Production yields are anticipated to be over 3000 lbs of produce, all of which is distributed directly back to our community through partnerships with non-profits that support food security, sustainable living, and healthy lifestyles.

The project began with just a few small, raised beds behind the Phoenixville Area Middle School, and grew to an additional 6 beds when relocated to a larger field at the corner of City Line and Lincoln Avenues. Since then, the project has undergone another expansion and now features 12 standard cypress garden beds, and 4 in-ground growing areas, fencing, irrigation, fruit trees and berry plants, a compost area, and an outdoor classroom space with a seasonal canopy. Trellis provides educational programming to a high school and middle school contingent who are learning to care for and manage the garden. The students are learning not just how to garden, but also planning and management skills, understanding of local food production and need, and community-minded thinking. Additionally, the project has been expanded to include satellite garden supports at three of our local elementary schools.

The project is funded in part by the Phoenixville Area School District and support from a grant from the U.S. Department of Education.
